Music I'm Listening To (September 2021)

Latest in the quarterly music update. Did you know that Q4 starts in October? September always feels more like a last-three-months kind of month, which just goes to show that I can't count.

The theme for this post is basslines, I guess, though I didn't realize that until I put this together.

Tiffany Day - The Dependency Project

Every song on this album has been stuck in my head at some point in the last couple months. Catchy rhythms, rich production, angsty lyrics - what more can you ask for? It's interesting because it doesn't feel that dense, yet there must be a ton of layers because I keep noticing new details in the background on relistens. Shoutout specifically to CALONE, the song that first caught my attention via Discover Weekly, for a sick bassline.

Sung Lee - Don't Start Now

The guitar is basically magic to me, in the sense that it's possible to get a wide variety of sounds of it, and I have no idea how it works. But even I can tell Sung Lee is really good at it, and a great singer as well. There's a good amount of reharmonization over the original Dua Lipa song, but it feels completely natural. As a side note, I also like the Pomplamoose version, and Dua Lipa's entire Future Nostalgia album is good too (and also features a lot of cool bass stuff). Thanks for suggesting this one Andy - usually I do all my music-listening through Spotify, but this video was so compelling that I had to have a YouTube tab open all the time as well. Sung Lee's Instagram suggests she's writing her own stuff too, so I'm looking forward to that.

HEIZE - Like the first time (feat. Gary)

It's so rare to hear a song with a prominent violin part these days. I really like the instrumentation on here between the strings and piano, and the rap section from Gary is a striking contrast. The clarity of HEIZE's voice really shines on the reverb. The piano part at the hook (a descending melodic line, alternating with the same note at the bottom) also just reminds me intensely of the Great Fairy Fountain theme from Legend of Zelda. Expect to hear it in my next cover, probably. You might notice this one doesn't have any fancy bass stuff, but that's because it's all on the previous song, HAPPEN, which I also listened to a lot these past few months.

P.S. I'm always looking for new recommendations, so hit me up if you've heard anything good lately.
