Bogoshipda (보고싶다)

This is our cover of Bogoshipda (보고싶다), by Kim Bum-Soo. It features Joanne and Daniel on vocals, and me on piano and saxophone.

Notes about making this:

This is a nice ballad, so of course it deserves a saxophone solo - thanks Lois for the suggestion to cover it. That was back in April, though we didn't get around to working on it until a couple months later.

The piano that you hear in the final recording wasn't supposed to make it this far; back in June when I first started, I totally intended to just get any piano part down as a backing track. My roommate Joanne and I recorded a quick demo at first and I really liked the potential. The plan was to write a proper piano part next, and re-record everything over that.

And then... I got busy with some other stuff. By the time I sat down at the piano bench again, several weeks later, I didn't even remember the chord progressions. So instead, I ended up just re-recording a few problem spots and doing a little audio snippet surgery to put the piano part back together.

Somewhere along the way, I was inspired by AKMU's Will Last Forever: this song is just so cool. Go listen to it right now if you haven't already. I wanted to do something like that, with the interwoven female-male harmonies, and this song was the perfect candidate.

At first I was thinking about doing the vocals myself, and I got around to recording a demo part (mumbling all the words because I didn't learn them). But then I heard my friend Daniel sing for just a couple seconds in the echoey lobby of his apartment building. Wow. That's exactly what I needed. Soon after, with the help of some burpees (which always improve your singing), we were done recording!

Thanks to Lois for suggesting the song. Thanks to Yee Aun for moral support. And of course, thanks to Joanne and Daniel for being great singers and collaborators.
